As law students are required to complete 30 days (225 hours) of volunteering in a legal environment, BCLS has an established volunteering program for university students that allows them to act in a variety of supervised roles.
The areas in which we engage these volunteers include solicitor assistance, court duty, night service, community legal education and general administration. Initially, a new student volunteer do administration duties (data entry, file revision, publications etc.) and progress to other areas once they have gained experience and an opportunity to temporarily or permanently fill a position becomes available.
BCLS has the capacity to support between 12 – 15 volunteer students at any one time and keeps prospective volunteer applications for up to six months.
* Volunteers are subject to a current police check before commencing work at BCLS.
In conjunction with Deakin University, BCLS also operates a Student Clinic comprised of final year law students undertaking a credited unit that requires them to gain practical experience within a legal environment under the supervision of our Principal Lawyer. Students interact firsthand with in-house lawyers and clients, manage files and complete casework – all of which helps to prepare them for their future career, whether that be in the private or community-based sector.
BCLS has allocated three students for this clinic during trimester 1 and trimester 2 of the academic year.
